Lure of the Swamp by Lindsey Kuhn

Lindsey Kuhn has been screen printing since 1984. For the past 18 years he has been creating posters for shows around the world. Keeping his Do-It-Yourself ethic alive by printing and selling his own work as well as other artists through his print company called SWAMP.

“If there is one thing that makes America great, it’s a special type of self made pioneer, the true D.I.Y... The Trailblazer! That unique person that grabs a hold of his world and his culture and molds it into energy and momentum. There’s an old term for it, STOKED. And Lindsey is a being, STOKED to the fullest!” -Kozik 2009

"Lure of The Swamp" is his first book featuring over 100 color pages of pure rock poster art. It chronicles 26 years of Lindsey's printing history through vivid imagery and interviews. If you like rock posters this is the book to get!

Stapleton

I'm stopping at Stapleton this afternoon when I get off work sometime around 3:00. I've been stopping at Brighton to shovel/dig/chop ice but despite the warm weather the last layer of ice refuses to melt. Im thinking of getting a propane torch to melt the final layer. I saw a guy at Denver using one and it seems to work well.

New Rec Center

Central’ Rec Center focus of Sept. 15 meeting

■ Public will be asked to discuss preferences for either new Congress Park construction or buying a new site

BY RORY SEEBERThe Parks & Recreation Department will host a Sept.15 open house to “gather public input on site selection for a new recreation center in central Denver.” The meeting will be held in Mitchell Hall of Denver Botanic Gardens, 1005 York, 6-8 pm. The public will be asked to discuss preferences for either new construction surrounding the Congress Park pool, 9th & Josephine, or acquiring a new site
The November 2007 bond issue passed by voters included a total of $11 million earmarked for acquiring a site and designing a recreation center for the central city. The bond issue will not supply funds for the construction of a central rec center, only for its site and design. The area with a rec center “service gap” to be served by the new facility includes northeast City Council District 10, southeast District 8 and southwest District 5. District 10 is the only Council district in the city that doesn’t have any indoor city rec centers.
An “initial public conversation” on the rec center bond project was hosted in April 2008 by District 10 City Councilwoman Jeanne Robb. The approximately 50 attendees at that forum, which used a “Build-a-Center Workshop” charrette-style format, primarily developed suggestions for programs and facilities for the future center. Possible sites proposed at that gathering included: the vacant square block Gove Middle School property between 13th & 14th on the east side of Colorado Blvd. (the most favored location); the former University Hospital and Children’s Hospital campuses (Children’s is now earmarked as the future location of a new Exempla/St. Joseph hospital); Congress Park; the northeast quadrant of Cheesman Park; and the former Church in the City site near the northeast corner of Colfax & Josephine.

PHOTO BY JEFF HERSCHTHE TENNIS COURTS ARE A HIDDEN GEM in Congress Park, located north of the popular outdoor swimming pool. The park is one possible site for the future ‘Central Denver’ recreation center. The location of the future center will be the subject of a Sept. 15 public meeting to be held at 6 pm in Mitchell Hall of Denver Botanic Gardens, 1005 York. Call Parks & Rec at 720-913-0633 for information.
Picking a location that the city already owns, such as Congress Park, would eliminate the need to purchase property for the center and free up some funds. The majority opinion of participants in the earlier meeting favored a rec center with a multi-generational approach, a large fitness center, a multi-use pool and exercise room, and a two-court gym, among other amenities. For information on the September forum, contact Jill McGranahan of Parks & Rec at
720-913-0633 or jill.mcgranahan @denvergov.org.

They obviously need a skate park.

Anyway, let me know what time you are usually there at and I'll try and make it out if I have the time.

UPDATE: Northglenn Skatpark Meeting Thursday evening @ the Adams County Fairgrounds

via amanda Peterson

Thanks for helping get the word out! I tried to comment to the post, but wasn't able to. Would you be willing to add the following info as a followup to that post? I want to make sure that we have the best chance possible of getting funding for the park, and I want to make sure that everyone has all of the information that they need to be able to provide support for the project.

I just want to clarify a few details regarding this post -

1. The meeting is being held by the Adams County Open Space Advisory Board. Northglenn is a guest at this meeting.

2. Northglenn is applying for grant funding to be able to build a high quality, 15,000 square foot, concrete park

3. Anyone interested is welcome to come to the meeting to speak. There are a few rules, however. The County is giving the grants, so they get to set the rules! Everyone must arrive by 5:30 p.m. Anyone not arriving by that time will not be able to speak. There will be eight different grants presented that night. Northglenn will present the skate park project last.

Immediately following Northglenn's presentation, anyone who would like to speak on behalf of the project may. You will have one minute to voice your support for the project.

4. Please remember, this is a competitive grant process. We want to do everything that we can to show the board that they should give us this grant to build the park. Some things that they may take into consideration are:
- the interest in the project
- the need for the project
- the likelihood that the project will be well maintained and taken care of
- a respect for the Adams County Open Space Board and the grant process

If you want to see a skate park in Northglenn, getting this grant would allow it to be built! If you are willing to show your support for the project and the grant application, your voice could help the board make a decision to fund the skate park!

Please feel free to e-mail me at apeterson@northglenn.org if you would like more info.

Thanks!!
Amanda Peterson
Director of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services

Edwards and Snowmass

Teddy and I checked out the new Edwards bowl on Thursday. It might be difficult to see in this picture, but the waterfall has a hump on one side. This makes for one very large waterfall, and things get real fast and scary in the deep. Click for larger size.
IMG_1038

We also skated the new Snowmass park, twice. It's got three main areas: A big bowl with a deep square side, a backyard-type snowman-shaped bowl, and a flow area with a few interesting walls. The coping in the two bowls is Tedder stone, like the stuff in the shallow at Bennett.

This picture of the larger bowl doesn't do it justice. The deep end is very deep with a generous amount of vertical wall. And with the squared corners, it's fast. Click for larger size.

Mr. Miller Meets Mr. Inouye

A few weeks ago, when I was in Hood River, OR, I had the pleasure of meeting Tom "Wally" Inouye. He's a super nice guy. I went to his shop to get a few T-Shirts, and he didn't have the size I was looking for, so he ran up to his house, got the Tees and came back.

Back at his shop, we chatted for awhile. Later on in the day, when things started to cool off, we met at the skatepark and skated for about an hour and a half. It was totally cool, to skate with a guy that was one of your heroes. I copied his style from Skateboarder magazine back in the day, and I still have that style.

Look for the Denver Skate Shop, carrying IPS boards this fall!!

BTW, Wally and Scott Adams are the only two guys that I know that skate Trackers.

Still in HI

This is what Teddy and I have been skating while in Maui:

-roughly 4' shallow to 5' deep
-sloppy transitions, but has a little vert' everywhere
-dirty messy concrete with chipping paint
-poured-in-place concrete coping
-fun

The park also has some ramps, transitions, a mini ramp, and a vert' ramp. About 20 minutes away in Paia is a pay-to-play park built by RCMC, but why bother when this free ghetto park is five minutes away from where I'm staying, if that.

TRT: 99 mins

Showing: Friday, August 7, 10-12 pm and Saturday, August 8, 9:30-11:30 pm in the American Mountaineering Center's Foss Auditorium
Brief Synopsis: Skatopia: 88 Acres of Anarchy is a feature documentary that follows one of skateboarding's most infamous underground figures. Pro-skater Brewce Martin is the self-declared "dictator" of a rural Appalachian skate scene so extreme that MTV's bad-boy Bam Margera fled the property on his first visit. The movie follows Brewce for a tumultuous year as he struggles to keep Skatopia afloat. Though he declares skating his "prime directive," the film reveals a fiercely driven entrepreneur determined to achieve success on his own terms.

New Funhouse Lineup!!

Check out the new lineup from Funhouse! Killer shapes and killer graphics from JJ Rudisill in Brooklyn, NY. These obsessively detailed skateboard decks are designed and illustrated to old school standards, but utilize the most modern construction and concaves for superior functionality. CNC cut and cold- pressed from superior hard rock maple, these boards are as fun to skate as they are to look at. A soulful antidote to the logo driven mass-production of the modern era, these small-run collectible skateboard decks are instant classics.

Hydrology Issues @ Bennett

Tim and I went out to Bennett this morning to skate the pool out there, and unfortunately it was underwater. It could have been cleaned out, with not TOO much effort however the surrounded area was inundated with H2O as well.

They had a bunch of rain out there. After assessing the situation and deciding it was a no go we went over to town maintenance, and they told us that they are going to be pumping a lot of water into the area surrounding the park, so it'll be swampy for a few more days. I'm heading out there Monday or Tuesday. I'll keep you guys posted. It wasn't a total loss for Tim and myself though, we skated Wheel before Bennett and then went over to Brighton after. Tim did a lot of driving, I don't think he was that pleased.

Twisted!!

Jimbo came over this evening a got a deck, and as he was going through the stack he found a deck that has a slight warp. After he left I went through the stack and found a few more. I have 4 decks that are have a slight twist and need to go. I'm getting rid of them for $20 a pop. If the deck warps up on your heel, the twist will go away in about a week.

So if anyone knows a grom out there who needs a new ride and doesn't mind a little twist send them my way.

Here they are:

Throw in another $5 and get a slice of grip tape.

Thanks,

Colorado Springs or Tony Hawk or Whatever?

OK...so here's the deal. A couple of folks called me up telling me about the "grand poo baa" opening at the Nederland skatepark. Tony Hawk is gonna be there. Which is way cool. However, I also know that an ass load of people are gonna be up there as well.

Hey if my neighbor, chick 27 yrs. old, doesn't skate, called me up to tell me, I think everyone in the state now knows. Besides, about two weeks ago, this dude called me up asking me if I wanted to set up a booth up there. He told me that over the course of the weekend they'll be about 10,000 people up there.

So, I'm not gonna get to skate, there's gonna be a double ass load of grommets up there, and there's only one way into Nederland and one way out.  I think I'll pass. Hey, Tony Hawk is awesome, if and when I ever get to meet him, I'm gonna thank him SO much for the $$$ he donated to the Bennett DIY skate project, and Nederland and so many others. I just don't want to plow through 10,000 grommets to do so. Hell, I just got done teaching, why would I want to throw myself back in the fiery pit of doom?

Anyway, I'll be skating tomorrow morning at the Springs with Lindsey and the Conspiracy guys, I hope everyone has an awesome Saturday where ever your skate trip takes you!

Grindline In Edwards!

Freedom Skate Park Addition

The Skate Park in Edwards is receiving an upgrade to its existing amenities.  70 feet in length and 50 feet wide, the addition includes a 16 ft. high "cradle".  Rick Cook, a local real estate agent who was instrumental in the first skate park, spent more than a year to secure funding for the addition.  Contributors include:  Berry Creek and Edwards Metropolitan Districts, WECMRD and Eagle County - $40,000 each; Arrowhead Metropolitan District and Edwards Rotary - $5,000 each and private party donations totalling $6,000.

Construction began in April and the project's completion is expected in early June.  Eagle County's Road & Bridge Department re-located a storm water utility line to make way for the improvements.  Pete Fralick, P.E., is Eagle County Engineering Department's project engineer overseeing construction activities by Grindline Skateparks, Inc.

Coming Soon!!

New pool opening soon! This was the OG design for Bennett, before the frames got smashed. It's cool we'll still get to skate it though. This one has a lot more tranny than the other made to skate pools in CO. Which is cool, because I think the egg is perfect for the kids in Bennett.

Anyway, this pool was built by James Hedrick, Tim Mott, Chris B, Troy, and Greasy, with funds the city of Fort Collins had specifically earmarked for DIY skatepark projects.

How cool is that?!

"I wanted to thank you for your help on Saturday and for putting the word out for additional help. The wheelbarrow parade was awesome! Everything went smooth because of this and if it were not for your help, the wind would have really screwed us up.

Please extend my gratitude to the other guys (Scott, et al)"
