Hey Everyone,

If you haven't noticed already, I'm changing the name of my shop. I'm doing this because there is another shop located about a mile away from me called "The Denver Shop". Tony the owner, is a good guy, if you don't see what you like here, and you're local, go and check out The Denver Shop on Evan's across the street from DU.

Which brings me to the name change...When I first opened the shop back in 2005, "The Denver Shop", was called "Brother's Boards", so I decided to call my shop the Denver Skate Shop even though I was living in Aurora at the time. It just sounded better than "The Aurora Skate Shop". I believe for legal reasons or conflicts with past partners, the name Brothers Boards had to be changed to The Denver Shop. Of course this was done almost simultaneously as the opening of my shop, in 2005. This wasn't really a problem until laster year when I moved from Aurora to Denver, not far away from the skate shop that was formally called "Brother's Boards". Needless to say, this has caused confusion and hassles, for customer's, manufacturer's, distributors, and myself.

So with the new year, I've decided to revamp and rename my store. I still have the same great prices along with the same great service. However, I've installed new and improved shopping cart software that makes purchasing online much easier.

You can thank Duane Peters for skating the way you do. You can thank Duane Peters for defining skateboarding in the 1980s, and setting it on its current course. He took the elegant freestyle of the 1970s and shoved it through a meat grinder. He took skateboarding "Off The Wall" and went balls-to-the-wall. He put the snarl in gnarl, the punk in rock, the fuck in you. Duane Peters isn't a relic--he didn't invent the Indy Air and disappear, retire, or fade away. Pushing 50, DP has been charging as hard as ever, skating, touring, slamming, and getting right back up to do it again. But recently the Master Of Disaster had a bad knee injury turn worse. Gangrene. The doctors prepared to amputate his leg, but Duane pleaded to save it. He knew that no leg would mean no skating. And without skating, he'd descend into old habits that would pretty quickly kill him. He's been cleaning himself up, sharing the rough road with thousands of Twitter followers (@DuanePe! ters), and keeping his head straight to be able to raise his son, Clash. But skateboarding is the compass that makes that effort possible. No leg, quite simply, means no skating. And that would mean the end of the Master Of Disaster.

Saving his leg means saving himself. "Skate or Die" has never been more true than it is for Duane, right now. But to save his leg, Duane's been undergoing intense treatment and therapy. It's rigorous, painful, and very expensive. He's been selling everything he owns on eBay, and he's got thousands of dollars in medical bills stacked up against him. Duane needs our help (not just you or me, but us). He would never ask, so we are asking. The dozens of members of this coalition we call Rebate. It's about skaters helping skaters. It's about seeing a brother like DP backed against the wall and doing something about it. Whatever you can. If we all lend a hand, two things will happen: we will collectively raise some money to help Duane save his life, and in our efforts Duane will realize what he's given us all. Over the decades he's remained a champion for skateboarding. A champion of what skateboarding means. Do your part. Do what you can. Donate mone! y. Donate a valuable collectible item for auction. Whatever you can. But DO something. Help the master Of Disaster get through this, and get back on his board where he belongs. He deserves this. And you deserve this opportunity.

How To Fix a Flat Spot

How to fix a flat spot submitted by Eric Irwin

This weekend I figured out a way to "fix" a flat spotted wheel. I have only done this once, so I don't know how it will work on all wheels or all flat spots.

It requires the use of a belt sander, which I am aware that everyone will not have, but if you look around, you probably know someone that does. I used an 80 grit belt this time, but want to try a 120 grit the next time.

Start by clamping the board down (wheels up) to a solid piece of something, I used my workbench. Turn on the belt sander and run it across the wheel at about a 70 degree angle to the plane of rotation. You want to ensure that you are not sanding the wheel into a cone, so you've got to keep it flat to the wheel surface. The rough dirty surface of the wheel is a good indication of how level you are sanding. The wheel will spin pretty fast, but not fast enough to damage bearings or anything. As you pull the sander off the wheel, you can touch the wheel and and feel if you have removed the flat spot. Just keep repeating this until the wheel is round again.

You are putting a pretty severe side load into the sander. Be prepared for this and have a good hold on the tool. Also, this side load will tend to push the belt off center, so you may have to pull the sander away and let the belt re-center itself and then start again.

I ended up removing about 1/2 mm from the diameter of my wheel. I can still slightly feel the flat spot, but it is about 95% gone. I did put a little bit of a cone in my wheel, but that's what happens when you are experimenting. It is good enough that I don't feel the need to replace the wheels anymore.

I havn't skated with any of you guys so long, and that sucks. I kinda stopped skating for a while, while I finished highschool, and I've been getting back into it the past month, before I head off to college.

I hit wheel park today, and had a blast.

I did some other cool stuff, like those indy 180's in different places but my girlfriend was off doing other stuff, so I don't have them on video.

I need to work on my farmer's tan.

Woodward at Mills
I hadn't skated the indoor park at the Mills mall in a while, at least not since the bowl was torn out. Teddy and I went there yesterday. We had fun on the mid-sized ramp. But I was surprised by the lack of maintenance and unnecessary hazards. I noticed the following problems:

--Kick plates popping up (the "fix" of taping them to the concrete was not working)
--Ledges in the process of being built (unfinished wood structures with rough edges)
--A large trash can in the flow area with several long pieces of wood sticking out of the top
--Padding removed from the majority of the posts and placed on top of some of the ramps for no apparent reason
--Holes and chipping in some of the ramp surfaces

I can kind of understand the maintenance issues. But keeping a trash can full of scrap lumber in the skating area and removing the padding from the posts just doesn't make sense. I was kind of shocked.

Helmet Patrol
On another safety issue, a house bill (H.B. 10-1147) has been introduced in the Colorado legislature that, if made law, would require minors to wear helmets when biking, skating, riding scooters, or operating other non-motorized vehicles in public places. In short, it would be against the law for any minor to skate at any public Colorado skatepark without wearing a helmet. But there would be no tickets and no prosecutions. Instead, officers would advise the violator of the violation, explain the dangers of playing outside without wearing a helmet, and give the violator a pamphlet. This is a Bill. Yes, it's only a Bill. My guess is that it gets killed. Otherwise Colorado is going to have to print a lot of pamphlets.

Dear Skate Park Supporter,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in a skate park in Northglenn. As many of you know by now, we did receive funding from Adams County Open Space for the skate park! The park will be design in 2010, with construction planned for early 2011. This is very exciting news for everyone who worked so diligently for so long to make this project a reality in our community!

I am writing to again ask for your support. The skatepark budget, as was submitted to Adams County Open Space, does not include any lighting. TO further enhance the park, the City of Norhglenn is seeking additional funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) to add lighting to the park.

The lighting will be of the type that provides directional light to the park itself, while minimizing any impact to the surrounding area. It would be on a timer, and only usable during pre-determined hours. The lighting would be user-activated, so that energy is only used when the park is actually in use.

New From Tracker Trucks

The Tracker SixTrack debuted in 1979 and was the Number 1 choice of Pro Skaters worldwide.
During the late 70's, Tracker co-founder Gary Dodds prototyped a nylon baseplate that was actually lighter than the Magnesium bases. Since aerial maneuvers were coming on to the scene lightness was the key. However, skaters that rode their trucks tight found that there was flex in the base.

Gary and Larry then redesigned the nylon baseplate in the mid 80's and the new stiffer Ultralite Base was born. As skating progressed, a few skaters still found some flex in the New Vydynyte material.

By the late 80's Tracker's R & D found the perfect Carbon Graphite Composite material. Stiff, Ultralite and Strong as Hell. Larry has dug into his historic collection and released a limited amount of these Duralite Carbon Graphite Bases.
There trucks are 75 grams lighter than the original Tracker SixTrack.

I'm stopping at Stapleton this afternoon when I get off work sometime around 3:00. I've been stopping at Brighton to shovel/dig/chop ice but despite the warm weather the last layer of ice refuses to melt. Im thinking of getting a propane torch to melt the final layer. I saw a guy at Denver using one and it seems to work well.

Brighton update

I stopped by the Brighton skatepark after work today and the pool bowl is dry and clear. The street area only has a small amount of snow left and the flow bowl has a pretty big drift in the north end and a little bit in the rest. I will be there around 5 Tues. eve. Join me?
